Discover The Approach

Beacon Bay Therapy provides a Talking Therapy service in North London and online, underpinned by a Person-Centred Experiential (PCE) approach. This modality, grounded in the humanistic tradition and strongly influenced by Carl Rogers’ person-centred framework, facilitates clients’ exploration of emotions, bodily sensations, and lived experiences within the present moment. Through techniques such as focusing and emotion work, clients are supported in deepening emotional awareness and constructing new meanings from their experiences. The PCE approach is recognised within the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines as an evidence-based intervention for depression in the United Kingdom, with a growing body of research substantiating its efficacy for a range of emotional difficulties. Reasons People Seek Counselling

People come to counselling for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a clear difficulty, and sometimes it’s a quieter sense that something isn’t quite right. You don’t need to have everything worked out before starting — counselling can be a place to explore what’s going on beneath the surface.

  • Anxiety
Feeling constantly on edge, overwhelmed, or caught in cycles of worry that are hard to switch off.
  • Depression
Experiencing low mood, emotional numbness, loss of motivation, or a sense of heaviness that makes everyday life feel difficult.
  • Low self-worth
Struggling with self-criticism, shame, or a persistent feeling of not being “enough,” often rooted in earlier experiences.
  • Life transitions
Navigating change such as relationship shifts, career changes, parenthood, loss, or periods of uncertainty and adjustment.
  • Emotional stuckness
Feeling blocked, disconnected, or repeating the same patterns without fully understanding why.

What Does Psychotherapeutic Counselling Actually Feel Like?

What Does Psychotherapeutic Counselling Actually Feel Like?

I think for many people, psychotherapeutic counselling can feel mysterious before they begin. You may have seen it in films, heard people talk about it online, or read descriptions on websites, but none of that really explains what it feels like to actually sit in the room yourself. For some people, coming to therapy can feel nerve-racking. You may wonder what you are supposed to say, whether there will be awkward silences, whether you will cry, or whether you will be judged. Sometimes people worry that they will not explain themselves properly or that their problems are “not serious enough” to bring into therapy at all.

The Experiential Dimension of Person-Centred Therapy

While traditional person-centred therapy emphasises the therapeutic relationship and core conditions, the experiential extension deepens the approach by focusing more explicitly on the client’s moment-to-moment lived experience. Person-Centred Experiential (PCE) approaches—associated with developments such as Emotion-Focused Therapy and experiential process research—retain Rogers’ core philosophy but place greater emphasis on how clients access, process, and symbolise their internal experiences, particularly emotion.

Honest words from the people I’ve worked with.

“Michael has been excellent for me and we worked through some difficult times both past and present. His creative approach to psychotherapy through his experiential skills is something that is hard to find. If you are seeking someone who truly understands through experience and academia and who also works with images and other objects as well as in depth deep emotional talking through reflections and guidance he is the therapist for you. I can't thank him enough and I am in a much better place and dare I say it I feel joy again. Thank you Michael. I see him at Finchley Central which has clean and discrete counselling rooms and also sometimes online.”

“As I sit down to write this review, I find myself hesitating for a moment. Part of me wants to keep Michael a secret. After all, recommending him too enthusiastically might not be in my own best interest. If more people discover how good he is, it might become harder for me to get an appointment. Still, it would be unfair to keep such a good therapist to myself. I have been working with Michael for nearly a year, and the work we have done together has been meaningful to me. He listens carefully and makes a real effort to understand who I am and how I experience the world. Even during the more difficult moments in our work together, he has supported me with patience, empathy and genuine care. Over time, I have come to feel truly seen and understood. Michael is thoughtful and compassionate, and it is clear that he genuinely cares about the people he works with. Most importantly, beneath all his professionalism, he cannot quite hide that he is, first and foremost, a very good person. I feel lucky to have found him, and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for a therapist who is both perceptive and genuinely human. I hope you find the right person for you. Quite possibly Michael! I see him at his Finchley Central practice, which is only a five-minute walk from the tube station. There is a bus stop right outside the building, and I can usually find free parking on one of the nearby residential streets. There is also a lovely, quiet park around the corner, along with a few cafés, which can be nice if you would like a little time to yourself before or after a session.”

“Michael helped me through an extremely difficult period in my life, and I honestly can't thank him enough. From our first session he created a safe, supportive space where I felt genuinely heard and understood. His calm, compassionate approach helped me make sense of what I was going through and gave me the confidence to start moving forward again. What stood out most was his empathy, patience and ability to really listen. Therapy with Michael has been life-changing, and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone. Thank you Michael.”
